Comfort Dog

K9 Watson

We are proud to introduce our Comfort Dog Program, an initiative focused on supporting member well-being, assisting victims, and strengthening connections within our community. Recognizing the unique demands placed on public safety professionals, Sheriff Sam Elliott established this program to help address the stress and trauma associated with both critical incidents and the daily responsibilities of law enforcement. This effort reflects our continued commitment to fostering a healthy and resilient workforce.

The program includes a specially trained comfort dog paired with a dedicated handler who is trained in canine care, wellness support, and critical incident response. Additional trained staff provide support as needed. As part of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office Wellness and Peer Support Team, the program delivers a trauma-informed, non-clinical approach to care.

The Comfort Dog Team serves several important functions:

  • Providing support to staff during routine operations and high-stress situations
  • Offering comfort and stabilization following critical incidents
  • Assisting victims, witnesses, and community members in times of need
  • Enhancing community outreach and engagement efforts

A male Goldendoodle was selected for his temperament and suitability for this role. K9 Watson—named after Sherlock Holmes’ trusted partner—is trained by Working Dogs Oregon, a local nonprofit organization.
